Al James

A Passionate InspIring Teacher & Performer

For over 30 years I have divided my time between playing and teaching

Music Tuition / Teaching

I have taught in schools, colleges and universities. I currently work with Sistema Scotland and schools in the Scottish borders & teach private students with a wide range of ages, abilities and social backgrounds. I have been involved with outreach projects in and around Scotland. My experience includes teaching one-to-one basis, small groups and larger classes/workshops.

Performing

(Electric Bass Guitar / Double Bass)

Over the past 30 years I have been a highly active performer / working musician.

I have performed with Orchestras, Chamber Groups, Jazz Ensembles, Function Bands / Ceilidh Bands & Pit Orchestras

I have been involved in Studio Recording Sessions, Edinburgh Festival productions, and performed at the Celtic Connections festival.

My Own Studies

I studied Double Bass in Edinburgh with John Steer (Scottish Chamber Orchestra) and was taught in the classical tradition covering orchestral repertoire and music for solo Double Bass.

In addition I achieved an A.L.C.M. and studied composition with John McLeod before moving to Manchester in 1991 where I studied Double Bass for five years at the RNCM (Royal Northern College of Music)

I was fortunate to have had additional tuition with Dave Hassell, Mike Hall, and Stan Barker before returning to Edinburgh to attend Edinburgh University where I completed a Masters Degree in music teaching.
