The first step for many students is to acquire a solid technique with a focused approach from both student and teacher.

If the piece you’re working on has features that clearly fit with the Jazz tradition it may be appropriate to investigate how a walking bass line is built or how to interpret the rhythm of the melody from a stylistic viewpoint.

The same applies with Rock, Blues, Funk and so on, however the fundamental technique is the same. It will always be far more important to develop an appreciation of music and an understanding of what is appropriate in a given musical setting than to perform a grade eight piece at twice the stated tempo marking.

Establishing a practice habit with a clear sense of direction is essential and in time, leads to a well informed, adaptable and (more) employable performer.
